Day 23: Stage 19: Martigny & Zermatt, 20 kms, sun, 28°

Long Day!

Walking stage.

Train route.

I’m sitting in bed in a Zermatt hotel trying to write this at 22:00. Clearly it’s been a long day! The walk went very well and we were finished by 12:30. I’ve attached a series of photos with minimal commentary.

The first morning sunrise!

Heading up the valley towards Martenay.

The mountains continued to get better and higher!

Pissevache waterfall which literally translates to Cow Piss Waterfall! I guess there’s a story there somewhere?

Fabulous honey in this region of Switzerland! I enjoyed a taste this morning.

There is a brilliant community story to go with this photo. I will come back to this tomorrow. Clearly shows what a small world community we walk with.

Some beautiful walking trails.

These boulders were bigger than a house and fell from far above us. We didn’t linger!

Arriving into Martenay across a covered wooden bridge. Very cool! Sits across a very fast flowing glacial melt stream.

The Château de la Bâtiaz from 1260.

Celebrating Annemarie’s completion of her walk with a beer at lunch at the end of today’s stage.

We then scrambled to pickup some groceries and get to the train station. We will be celebrating our 42nd anniversary August 30th and have come to Zermatt to mark the day. Actually on THE Day I’ll be at the top of the Grand St. Bernard Pass in the Hospice and Annemarie will be in Holland. So we decided to celebrate early.

The train ride was a small comedy of errors, with several problems on the Zermatt leg which resulted in multiple delays. Hence the late blog. We arrived, walked to our hotel, showered and then headed off for dinner. A very good dinner!

The view from our place. We are here for a 3 full days before heading off in separate directions. We hope to catch up some sleep which is well behind, but there will also be a day in the alpine trekking. Lots to sort out and the two days will fly past! More updates tomorrow!
