Day 67: Stage 53: Montefiascone, 16 km, Sun & Cloud, 18°

Uphill All The Way!

Last night we again stayed in an apartment. I have been remiss in mentioning the great meals Rob has prepared. Last night we picked up a couple of fresh fish direct from Greece and a pile of veggies.

Really great! Plus a very good wine! Made for a great evening after a long day.

We got rolling a little later than normal today. Just 16 kms and almost not worth thinking about. Not quite, but you get the idea.

Day 16: You know what this is😅

Account settled we were on our way out of Bolsena.

The thing is, we climbed all morning. There was some downhill, but generally the direction was up. Yesterday I wasn’t really feeling the walk, and today it was Rob’s turn to be dragging a little bit. It goes like that with long distance walking. Some days you have it, some days you don’t.

Annemarie, that special place in Europe we’ve always talked about! I’ve paid a deposit.

We sarted to leave the caldera behind. You can see the clouds beginning to roll in. Rain is forecast for the coming days, and there’s nothing unusual about that in Italy during mid-October. Hopefully it will hold off during the day.

We met this woman who I assumed was looking for mushrooms. She was wandering around poking the ground with a stick, and there wasn’t a dog or a pig, so not truffle hunting. Had to be mushrooms!

The forest floor was again covered in a blanket of beautiful small flowers. Surprising to see them at this time of year, but every plant has its time to flower.

It was Sunday, and of course all the bicycle riders, motocross riders and Sunday drivers were out in force.

Clearly fall is in the air. We saw a family harvesting some of their vineyards. Some of the grapevines are already turning red and it won’t be long until the hills are covered in rows of beautiful red leaves.

New signage showed itself!

A cat and it’s friends!😂

Past noon, so ok to have a beer at the end of the stage!

We checked in, borrowed some chocolate and Rob almost immediately fell asleep! Off now to have a look around.

Tomorrow’s another reasonably short day. We have a few of these in a row right now, more for staging purposes. The weather is shifting and it’ll be interesting to see if we can make it to Rome without any rain. I certainly hope so!
